Izola

The old city core lies on what was once an island, inhabited as early as the first century A.D. and connected with the mainland with a stone bridge later in its history.

It was also surrounded by city walls, that were torn down in the beginning of the 19th century, while the rubble was used to fill in the strait between the island and the mainland. The city declared independence in the 13th century and established its own laws and administration. The tourist and culinary offering bear witness to the strong fishing tradition to this day. The hinterland allows you to sample the local delicacies, the olive oil and local wine.
