The old medieval town of Piran with its narrow streets and tightly packed houses has for centuries reigned over its namesake bay.
Maritime trade and trade with the hinterland, salt pans and the ideal climate ensured wealth and power to Piran. The many cultural and historic as well as ecclesiastical buildings, palaces, lively squares, museums and galleries, the city walls, the aquarium and great restaurants give the city a peculiar charm. The composer, violinist and musical pedagogue Giuseppe Tartini, born here in 1692, also left an important mark on the city, which is a veritable open air museum and hosts many cultural events throughout the year, that complement its offer to its visitors.
