Anna van der Merwe
Born and raised in South Africa, Anna completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies with high distinction at the University of Cape Town and Kunstuniversität Graz respectively. Under the tutelage of Farida Bacharova and Sylvia Viertel, Anna received numerous awards and scholarships such as the Oppenheimer Memorial Award during her studies and won prizes at several competitions including ATKV Muziq and Fine Music Radio awards. Anna has also performed as a soloist with all of South Africa's major orchestras, including the Johannesburg Philharmonic and Kwazulu-Natal Philharmonic. She has received masterclasses from Daniel Rowland, Mi-Kyung Lee and Shlomo Mintz, amongst others.
Anna is currently an academic with the Bamberger Symphoniker.
Ema Grčman began her musical education at age six, studying cello with professor Vladimir Kovačič. She continued her education at the Music and Ballet Conservatory in Ljubljana in the class of professor Milan Vrsajkov and professor Karmen Pečar Koritnik. In 2014 she successfully passed the admission exams at the Academy of Music of the University of Zagreb and began her studies in the class of professor Valter Dešpalj. From 2016 on she continued her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, in the class of professor Julian Arp. She regularly attends cello master classes with famous professors such as Christoph Richter, Martin Ostertag, Mark Ylönen, Giovanni Gnocchi, Claudio Bohorquez, Marc Coppey and others.
Since 2018 she performs together with violinist Maja Horvat as a string duo, and the two have performed at many festivals together: Tartini Festival, Bled Festival, Lent Festival, Sobota Days Festival, Ljubljana Festival, Imago Sloveniae and the Stift Festival in Holland. In February of 2017 they performed the famous Double Concerto by Brahms as soloists accompanied by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ema is a member of the German chamber orchestra Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss am Rhein and holder of a scholarship awarded by the Municipality of Ljubljana.
