I Solisti Veneti

The popular Italian Chamber Orchestra, “I Solisti Veneti”, which celebrates its 55th anniversary in the 2014/15 concert season, was founded by Claudio Scimone in 1959. The orchestra has presented over 6.000 concerts in over 90 Countries, has participated in the most important International Festivals, recorded over 350 LPs, CDs and DVDs, and has a rich selection of cultural and promotional activities.

“I Solisti Veneti” and Claudio Scimone have obtained the highest awards in the musical field. In 2008 at the La Fenice Theatre in Venice, they received from the Arthur Rubinstein Association the “Una Vita per la Musica” award, which is considered in Italy as the Nobel Prize for music.

They have worked with the best singers and soloists of our era, among them Placido Domingo, José Carreras, June Anderson, to mention only a few. They have successfully revived hundreds of previously unknown concert and opera works from the Italian musical heritage, thus revealing several great composers of the past. Many among the most famous composers of our era, including Ennio Morricone, dedicated pieces to “I Solisti Veneti”.

To highlight the deep connection between Venetian music, architecture and figurative arts, they are recording a series of very important DVDs, among which is “Vivaldi’s Seasons in Palladio’s Villas” (Arthaus).

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations in 2008 the European Parliament honoured the Orchestra with an official plaque where they are praised as “Ambassadors of culture and music across the borders”.I

Claudio Scimone

Claudio Scimone

Claudio Scimone is the founder and Musical Director of “I Solisti Veneti”. He has debuted in Opera performances at Covent Garden, London and been involved in operas, concerts and recordings with many of the greatest world artistic organisations. He is also the Honorary Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.

With his memorable first modern performance of “Orlando Furioso”, directed by Pierluigi Pizzi and featuring Marilyn Horne and Victoria de Los Angeles, he led the world to discover the importance of Vivaldi’s theatrical works.

Scimone conducted and recorded the first modern integral performances of several works of great composers. For example with the Philharmonia of London he conducted the only existing recording of Muzio Clementi’s Symphonies.

Claudio Scimone has always been passionate about the musical education of young people. This work is one of the reasons why he was awarded the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (the highest ranking honour of the Republic). The University of Padua also recently awarded him an honorary law degree.
