Vladimir Mendelssohn, viola
was born into a musical family in Romania and studied viola and composition in Bucharest. He is very much in demand as a player of chamber music and regularly performs at numerous music festivals with the world's top musicians. He has also given solo concerts and made many recordings for different record labels. Mendelssohn is a prolific composer, having written works for solo instruments, mixed choir and symphony and chamber orchestra. He has also written music for the ballet, stage and screen. At present he is professor of chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire and also teaches in The Hague, Essen and Bologna. He gives masterclasses around the world. Since the early 1980s he has regularly appeared at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and has been its Artistic Director since autumn 2005.
Frieder Berthold, cello
Born in Germany, Frieder is an internationally acclaimed cellist who has performed in all the major music centers of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, Russia, Korea and Japan, giving recitals and performing as soloist with established orchestras. He studied at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and studied chambermusic with the Amadeus Quartet. He received a bursary from the Global Würth Foundation in order to study with J. Starker at the Indiana University in Bloomington, USA. Fundamental to his musical development have been masterclasses during international festivals with Mischa Maisky, William Pleeth, R. Dubinsky (Borodin Quartet), S. Devich (Bartok Quartet), F. Erblich (Orlando Quartet), and Norbert Brainin (Amadeus Quartet) with whom, since 1994, he has regularly performed in chambermusic recitals.
Andrea Rucli, piano
Andrea Rucli has won awards in numerous piano competitions and regularly performs as both soloist and chamber musician. He perfected his skills under Konstantin Bogino and later worked as his assistant. Rucli and Bogino also give concerts together as a piano duo. He has earned great respect as a musician, especially as someone who has promoted the music of the composer Ella von Schultz Adaiewsky (1846–1916). In the spring of 2011, he performed that composer's works reconstructed by Vladimir Mendelssohn at the Italian President's Palace as part of the acclaimed Quirinale series in Rome. In fact, he was also invited back there. Rucli has also actively promoted Finland and Finnish culture in Italy. In recognition he was awarded membership of the Finnish Kalevala Society and received official recognition from the Finnish Embassy.
